• Syncterm connect strings

From Underminer@VERT/UNDRMINE to Deuce on Monday, April 20, 2015 23:26:42
    Hey Deuce,
Not to bug you, but is there offhand a simple setting to get syncterm to recognize alt connection messages? I've been playing with some dialup connections and have an old 14.4 modem that gives a "carrier (connect speed)" return rather than "Connect (connect speed)" and syncterm doesn't seem to like it and immediately drops the connection, whereas hyperterm et all seem happy enough with it.

    Just curious.

What kind of modem is it (brand and model)?

Is it possible it's actually returning *multiple* result verbal result codes upon connection establishment? If it's returning a "CARRIER xxx" result before the "CONNECT xxx" result, we could modify syncterm to just ignore the "CARRIER xxx" result code and wait for the connect (rather than immediately assume the result code is something like "NO CARRIER").

You could test this by using a terminal program (event SyncTERM) in just dumb serial mode and dialing the number using the ATD<number> command.

I'm pretty sure this behavior of your modem could be controlled with an AT command in the modem initialization string, but without knowing the make and model of the modem, I can't guess what that would be. My old analog modem init-string-fu skills are pretty rusty. :-)

There is not. I could make it configurable if you need the feature though.

Thanks, Deuce. I don't think it's a big deal as I have numerous other modems kicking around to play with, that one just seems to play nicer with voip for some reason.

What is the make and model of the modem? Do you know if it's outputting "CARRIER xxx" instead of "CONNECT xxx" or in addition to?

It's a Bocamodem 14.4kbps Pocket Modem. Yes, it's outputting carrier xxx rather than connect xxx, not both.

I'm pretty sure those result codes are sent in *addition* to the CONNECT result
code. In any case, setting S95=3 in your modem initialization string should fix
that. If you want to save this to your modem's NVRAM, you can type "ATS95=3&W" in a terminal program and then future use of "ATZ" will reload that setting.

There are other optional connection progress "extended result codes" which could interfere with SyncTERM, including "PROTOCOL xxxx" and "COMPRESSION". ATS95=3 will disable those too.
