• Remote Control Camera Bot

Well since you mentioned RC, the coolest thing I've ever done with anything radio controlled was back in 2000. I took an old remote-controlled Radio
Shack futuristic tank-looking toy with a claw on the front and modified it.
I took off the claw because it didn't work too well and got in the way, and I took off a weird "War of the Worlds"-looking lamp head on top. It had a
great set of treads though, that I improved by adding some steel spikes to
for added traction. In the place of the claw in the front I put an old RC
car wheel to help it climb over things in the front. Anyway, that's the
base. But here's the best part. I bought a tiny wireless color camera from X-10 and a battery pack for it. I mounted (lots of tape.. heh) these on the top of the "robot," with the camera facing forward. I also mounted two small flashlights on the top pointing forward to illuminate the camera's field of vision, and also a battery-powered reading light that stood up in the back (without the shade on) to throw some ambient light around. Here's where the fun starts. With the video received on a TV in my bedroom, I put the little robot at the entrace to my crawlspace and drove it around down there under
the house. It was awesome. The only bad thing is that it actually got stuck once and I had to crawl down there and get it loose (from some plastic sheeting). But other than that, it worked like a charm. I video taped the camera's output for posterity as well. When I was done I drove it back to
the opening of the crawlspace and picked it up. Fun stuff.

Then there was that time I sent the robot down the hall into the living room during one of my brother's parties... but that's for another time. :)

There was just an article on SlashDot a couple days ago about a guy who
    did this. Was that you?

Nope. Do you have a link to the article? I'd love to see it. I'm sure his
    was much cooler than mine.

Haha, yeah, mine looked pretty similar in terms of stuff taped to the top.
I think I actually video taped what it looked like instead of taking pictures (didn't have a digital camera then), so I'll have to find that tape and take some screen shots. His was executed in a neater fashion though. I think I used masking tape. :)

    Thanks for the link.

I particularly liked the story that goes along with it.

Thanks. It was a fun experience.. and I have trouble finding people who appreciate that sort of thing.

Holy crap. That's hilarious. I've gotta show that to my friend -- but he's going to want to build one. :P
