It really is. Read over a study guide or two, take online sample tests until you can pass consistently, and you're good to go. There is no more Morse code requirement. The technician level test can almost be passed just using common sense guessing.

I'm an examiner and I've seen 8-year-old kids come in after a weekend
cram class and ace the tech level exam.

Sadly, the majority of folks who get the ticket, never actually learn how to operate, or even use a radio at all.

    Indeed!

I got licensed after the code requirement was dropped, but there is a certain snobbery in the hobby towards "no-code" hams, so I made it a point to learn
it and actually use it. I wanted to get into hiking with radio and making contacts from mountain tops and code seemed the best way to do that reliably since it doesn't require a lot of power or complicated gear.

During the recent K1N expedition, code was the only way I managed to make a contact since the "pile-ups" for voice contacts were fierce.

It's a very unique and efficient method of communication once your brain gets past the initial shock of it! Anyone looking to get into CW ops, I'd suggest finding a local code guru to watch and learn from. Or maybe watch some YouTube videos. After that, it's a matter of listening and getting a knack for the
use of shorthand, prosigns, procedures, etc.

It's not easy, but if you can send and recognize your callsign and "5NN" (the universal or lazy signal report), you can work the world.

I'm a no code ham we went to a super station. 40 Acre sight with 45 towers. 6 $12,000
radios all they used it for was contesting CW.. Seemed like if you didn't know code.. They
didn't seem to have the time of day for you. Most hams on 2 meters here are really nice
people. I showed up at field day.. A guy asked if I was a ham.. his friend was like he's a
wanna be ham. I was offended by that comment and let them know to. I prefer a club 30 miles
from here other then local. Funny thing is the guy that signed my license was the one that
made the comment.. Just because my job keeps me from going to meetings.. They said they was
going to operate all night and was gone when I came back I hit several clubs and stayed out all
night till it was over. I do pay club dues and feel good about using local repeaters.. I have
a general class license and am trying to get extra class.. I have my VEC badge.. IF you don't
have money for HF stuff put on the headphones and turn some dials on remotehams.com they sound
like the real thing or just as good as owning one...
