In my last reply, I forgot to mention some message networks (such as FidoNet) traditionally have required real names.

that was for accountability... mainly to protect the sysops because there wasn't (and still isn't) a "common carrier" classification for BBSes... if someone did something illegal via your board, you were liable for it...

a lot of systems took to posting that bulletin saying something like "according to blah blah, we monitor all activities, etc" which actually opened them up for more liability because they couldn't monitor every single post or file that came through... especially network posts when you might get 1000 or more a day...

i've had folks tell me they could catch the posts like that... my reply to them was just such a message that contained a hidden message for those that knew how to find it... once the hidden message was pointed out to them, they realized and kinda backed off that stance...

PS: yes, i know this post is old... i'm just catching up on this area... using ssh from the linux terminal command line with DM's new unicode translation stuff... works pretty damned well, too! :) my next stop, once i finish reading these next 900 or so posts is the advertisement area with all the ANSI posts... i'm curious to see how they work... my initial screens looked great so i don't expect much trouble :)

Yeah - some guy pissed off another guy, and he spammed Usenet with an all-caps slanderous rant to hundreds of newsgroups. The post from the BBS showed up in google's search results, and the guy wrote a cease and desist letter to my ISP.

i had some asshole who runs a bbs sign up for my newsletter and then report it as spam directly to my isp. like he took the extra mile. all of a sudden stuff doesnt work right. it works half okay because i dont use their dns servers. ISP tried some trick to get my attention. they could have called me but they didnt.

anyways, i called them up when i figure it out and i said 'i'm fine with running servers for personal useage, right? i dont run a busines' they say 'yes sir'

then i said, go look at my websites and see they are not even on the same ISP as you and see what they are for.

they unlocked my account and made it so some fuckwad cant do that to me again. hi foxriver.net
